Looking Back

Posted by Amami Superman

When I usually take photos and get them uploaded to my computer, I go through them and choose the ones most appealing to me. I also skip over the ones that aren't so appealing but could be, with a little post editing. So I decided to go back and look at the photos I didn't like so much at first and try to fix them up so they look better than the original.

Here's my first post of a photo that I didn't like at first, but after a bit of post editing, I thought I'd share it with you.

Nikon D60, Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 22mm, 1/1250 sec, f/4.0, ISO 1600 -- EXIF
Dark Reaches of the Forsest

I upped the Vibrancy and Saturation and did a bit of Sharpening in Lightroom 2. This photo stuck out to me even though I didn't think it was that great. While passing over the different photos I took from this day, I kept coming back to this one. I suppose we all have our tastes.

PC Repair Shop

Posted by Amami Superman

There's a little PC repair shop near my house that has a pretty interesting wall. I was walking by with my camera one day and decided to snap a shot.

The wall is covered in thick vines almost like shrubs. They trimmed the vines and made this interesting picture on the wall. The far left vines are a hand pointing to "パソコン" (pasokon).

Nikon D60, Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 18mm, 1/800 sec, f/4.0, ISO 800 -- EXIF
"Computers will definitely break."

Japanese call any desktop computer a "pasokon", which is short for "personal computer", even if it's a Mac. In English, PC is short for "personal computer", and we all know that PC's and Macs are NOT the same thing. I'm a loyal Mac user and I'm continually reminded by my friends ,who use PC's, how much Macs suck butt. I guess I'll never learn... ANYWAY, the caption on the wall uses the word "必ず" (kanarazu), and there are a few ways to say this word in English like, "surely" or "certainly". The word "故障する" (koshou suru), I thought, means "to break (down)". I was curious to know what Google Translate would come up with.

I got a laugh at that. I don't think I could "Contribute a better translation", than that...

Isolated in Amami

Windy

I had last Wednesday off, but it was cold and windy and I didn't want to go out. It was so cold that it hailed for a few seconds. It usually doesn't get that cold here in Amami. So instead of going out, I sat in my wife's shop and snapped shots of people walking by. The originals weren't that great so I tried to think of something to do to them to make them seem a little more artistic. I cruised around the interwebs looking for ideas and I came across a few photos that isolated the subject by turning all the colors besides the subject to black and white. I thought this would be something cool to try.

After importing my photos to Lightroom 2, I selected the Edit In feature and brought them into Photoshop CS3. I then made a duplicate of the background. I selected the background copy and used the Desaturate feature to make it black and white. Next, I adjusted the Contrast and Brightness to the desired effect I wanted. After that, I made an opacity mask of the background copy and commenced to hide the subject revealing the color image underneath. Once I finished, I saved it and returned to Lightroom 2 to do a few more tweeks upping the blacks and giving them some vignettes. I thought they turned out pretty nice compared to the originals.

I wanted to show the originals also but I didn't want to just stick the originals into the post so I decided to do a little html work and make some mouse-over images. I hope you like them.

Not My Best, Not My Worst

Well Before Sunset

Just After

These are 2 of the sunset photos I took last Monday when I took the family to Ohama Beach Park. The first photo was edited in Lightroom 2 adjusting the variable settings Exposure, Fill Light, Blacks, etc. On the second photo I used a Magenta Graduated Filter in Lightroom 2 to give the sky a hint of purple. I thought it was OK. Not my best sunset photos, but definitely not my worst.

What Are They Looking At?

What's in the Pond?
(more like a puddle though)

Salamanders or Large Tadpoles?

They have these HUGE toads here in Amami and I'm not sure if these are just salamanders or the tadpoles to those really big toads. I had to get down on my stomach and sneak up on these guys or they would get scared and hide under the leaves.

Really Big Leaves

Again, I had my camera set to Auto and it took a blown out photo. I had my Metering Mode set to Matrix so it wasn't Spot this time. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong to make my camera do this.

My Girl Jade

When I went to take this shot, I meant to set the Aperture to wide open, but I wasn't paying attention and set it to wide shut...

When we first got to where we wanted to watch the sunset from last Monday, the clouds were rolling in and it didn't look as though we would be able to see it. We got there early so we walked around checking things out and playing with our dog Missy. As it got closer to sunset, it looked like we were going to see it after all. I'm not sure if I like any of the photos I got of it, but I'm still looking through them and I'll post one or two if I like any of them.

Then BAM! You're dead and she's gone as fast as she came.

Took the family out to watch the sunset at Ohama Beach last Monday and I snapped these. We had some really nice weather over the weekend. Then it turned cold and nasty on Tuesday with wind and rain.

From Bad to Not-So-Bad

I've been trying to use Aperture Priority more to understand how it works. For the life of me, I don't understand why the camera chose 1/80 sec. The only thing I can think of is the Metering Mode was set to Spot and Jade was kind of dark in the shadows. Either way, this photo was blown out and I did some post editing to fix it up and I think it turned out OK. Oh, and the glare is off the cars in the parking lot just up the stairs.

I've never thought of taking a photo with the camera at an angle, but I've seen plenty of nice looking photos that have so I thought I would try and take a shot at it.

This photo was taken the day we went to see the cherry blossoms.
